Welcome

Welcome to my photoblog. I try to keep it updated daily with a new photo from either my personal or professional life. It is not intended to be taken as my professional portfolio (please visit the main website for that), but instead it is more of an informal and fun way for me to share some of my personality and creativity with you. Many of the photos on my blog are available for purchase as fine art prints, please visit the main website and/or contact me if you are interested. Enjoy!

Unboxing - Lexar 8GB Jumpdrive TwistTurn

I won last week's Tip Tuesday on Lexar's Facebook fan page, and as a neat little prize Lexar sent me this nice little 8GB jumpdrive. I figured I would do a quick little unboxing for this handy little drive.

The packaging is simple and to the point. There is nothing but the drive inside, which is fine since it's not like instructions or drivers are required for this type of device. There is not much plastic in the packaging either which is good on an environmental factor. The rest is all recyclable cardboard. It does not come with any type of chain or cord to attach onto the main loop on top, which is not a big deal for me since I never use them, but others may find that a bit of an annoyance.

Out of the packaging the drive is a decently small size. Not as tiny as some, but not huge either. Fully closed it is only 6.5cm in length. The rotating top serves as the cap protection for the dongle, and it clicks closed so that it does not just randomly open when not being used. It is made with mostly plastic, but it does feel like it could take a beating and still keep working.

This is what it looks like plugged into my laptop. There is a nice little red LED that blinks during activity. I am also glad to see that they went with a very standard size width making my second usb port also still available right beside it. I have had problems in the past with bulky USB drives that block the adjacent port!

All in all it's a decent little drive. 8GB is plenty for my daily use. Writing speed could have been better, I calculated an average of around 6-7Mb/s, while reading speed is very nice and steady 22Mb/s.

Many thanks Lexar for this fun and useful tool!

Vascular Highway

Today's shot for the "Photo a Day" project is called Vascular Highway. I wanted more of a challenge for today's shot, so this was taken with one of the worst cameras I have ever used. I guess it's proof that it doesn't matter what kind of equipment you use but rather it's the photographer behind the camera that makes the image. Sure, I could have obtained a slightly better image with my equipment, such as more depth of field (I could not choose the aperture on this camera!), sharper overall, and higher resolution, but nevertheless I think this shot works even the way it is. It was a fun little test to see if I could get a shot that I liked using this very simple point and shoot camera.

Sodium Taste Test

Today's shot for the "Photo a Day" project is called Sodium Taste Test. This week is World Salt Awareness week, and I photographed a high sodium vs low sodium taste test to see if people could really notice the difference. Some food groups were a little easier to tell, but a few were surprisingly difficult to distinguish the difference.

I setup my Canon 5D mkII with the Canon 2X Teleconverter, all three Kenko Extension Tubes (68mm) and the Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS. The best thing about this is that everything works and you can get some amazing macro shots with this setup! See these previous shots taken with this exact setup: Orange Canary, Tasty Tangerine, and Refreshing.

What's In Your Camera Bag?

There are two shots for today's "Photo a Day" project called What's In Your Camera Bag?

This is what I typically carry around with me in my camera bag, but it does vary depending on what I plan on shooting. All my gear does not fit in the one bag, so sometimes things get swapped for one thing or another depending on what I'll be needing. The bag itself is a Lowepro Slingshot 200AW which as you can see can carry a surprising amount of gear! I really do like this camera bag, mainly because of the ease and speed I can grab my camera out while it is still on my shoulder. However, because this bag basically only has one main shoulder strap it does make carrying this amount of gear for an extended amount of time very hard on my shoulder and back. In case you were wondering this setup weighs a hefty 6.9kg (15.2lb)!
